Title Fight Schedule Update (Mar. 28)

There have been conflicting reports about the Montiel-Silva bantamweight title bout on Mar. 28. Fightnews.com reported with Boxrec.com's schedules confirming that former WBO Junior Bantamweight titleholder Fernando Montiel [38(28)-2(0)-1] of Mexico and WBO's #3-ranked contender Diego Oscar Silva [24(12)-1(0)-3] of Argentina will be fighting for the full WBO Bantamweight title.
I posted an entry Wednesday that this was for the interim title which is what was predominantly reported in all news related to the Latin Fury 8 card in Tijuana, Mexico. If this fight is indeed for the full title then that means Gerry Penalosa of the Philippines has been stripped or has relinquished his title. I will not be removing Penalosa yet from the tally until after the fight which will either confirm or refute the veracity of the report.
If the report is correct then the winner will replace Penalosa from the tally. If proven otherwise, my prior blog entry explains what I believe are the possible scenarios after this fight to the Penalosa-Juan Manuel Lopez bout and its consequences.
So if this is for the full title, here's my prediction:
Montiel by mid to late stoppage.

  1. well if that's what the WBO has in mind for the 118 pound crown, then so be it.

we all knew what was at stake by having Penalosa take on Lopez instead of Morel (his mandatory), and that Gerry had an April 2009 deadline to meet, since making his last mandatory against Sor Vorapin of Thailand back in April 2008.

no matter. we continue to sink deeper into the abyss of the world title tally... and may fall out of relevance soon enough :(

but April is the month of redemption.
    Donaire vs. Martinez
    Penalosa vs. Lopez
    Concepcion vs. Luevano

we could end up with as many as 4 belts by the end of May 2nd... GO PHILIPPINES!!!

  2. I probably spoke too soon bro. I went through a lot of articles on the Tijuana card and particularly the Montiel-Silva fight and it seems like it's still for the interim title.

Only fight news reported it to be for the full title as claimed by Montiel himself. I wasn't home last night so I only saw the spanish version of the fight. The english version might have explained it better. Anyway, I'll post a new entry shortly.

The politics of the sanctioning bodies man. It definitely is mind boggling.
